Opening day is set for Saturday, May 6 from noon – 4 p.m. at Beckman Mill County Park, located west of Beloit. This year’s theme is “Horsin’ Around the Mill”.
Chuck wagon chili served with corn muffins made with cornmeal ground at the mill will be for sale in the shelter at the park. Pop, water, coffee and desserts will be available also. Also in the shelter, music will be provided with John Sheehan with his concertina (think polka) and Zachary Peterson with his fiddle. Tap your toes, clap your hands, dance or just enjoy!
“Shoes for Horses?” is the name of the humorous children’s story book written by Pat Bryan. Kids can climb into the hay wagon to hear her read the story. The book will be available for purchase. Join Jim and Tammy for a horse drawn wagon ride!
Speaking of shoes for horses, have you ever seen them made? Ferrier and blacksmith Joe Staley and blacksmith’s Jim Ribordy and Andy Svoboda will show how it is done. They may even give you a chance to make something!
The mill began extensive renovations in 1990 with the formation of the Friends of Beckman Mill. The group continues its preservation efforts which have been accomplished by volunteers and their expertise in building, construction and engineering. The site has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
Corn grinding demonstrations will occur at the historic Beckman Mill. The cooperage/museum will be open for tours as well. New signage in the museum will guide you through the years of history of the Beckman property along with artifacts. Gary Hess, author of Roll Out the Barrels book, will be in the cooperage with a display and books to sign and sell. Also located in the park are the Griinke Creamery and Gift Shop building which will be open to the public.
A scrap metal drive will also be held during the day. Call 365-1600 for more details.
